KINNAUR KAILASH
KINNAUR KAILASH
Kinnaur Kailash is one of the most revered pilgrim sites in the Himalayas, situated in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Standing tall at over 18,000 feet, this site is one of the five Kailash pilgrimage sites, believed to be the winter abode of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims from across the country visit this sacred place, especially during the annual Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, which usually takes place in August. The trek to Kinnaur Kailash is challenging, demanding physical endurance and acclimatization due to the high altitude. In recent years, the increased footfall of pilgrims and trekkers has led to a significant rise in tourism in the area. While this has brought economic benefits to the local communities, it has also created environmental challenges, particularly the accumulation of waste. The influx of visitors has resulted in a growing garbage problem, with plastic waste, food wrappers, and other non-biodegradable items littering the pristine landscape. The Himalayan Tribe Foundation has recognized the need to address this issue.
Every year, the foundation organizes a clean-up drive at Kinnaur Kailash, timed to coincide with the pilgrimage season. The purpose of these drives is not only to clean the area but also to raise awareness among pilgrims and tourists about the importance of maintaining the sanctity of such a sacred site.During these drives, volunteers from the foundation and local communities trek to the site, often braving harsh weather conditions and challenging terrains to collect tonnes of garbage. The collected waste is then properly disposed of, often in collaboration with local waste management authorities. The foundation also uses these drives to educate visitors about the environmental impact of littering and the need to carry their waste back with them. The increasing tourism and the associated waste problem have made these clean-up drives essential. The Himalayan Tribe Foundation's efforts are helping to preserve the natural beauty and spiritual significance of Kinnaur Kailash while promoting a culture of responsibility and sustainability among visitors
